My background is rooted in fifteen years of experience working with individuals and families in a variety of health, mental health, and advocacy settings.

Jo Borkan

I completed a Masters in Clinical Social Work at Portland State University in 2009. I am licensed to practice therapy through the Oregon Board of Licensed Social Workers (License #6879).  Prior to opening my private therapy practice, I worked as a therapist in an integrative health clinic and as a clinical social worker in hospitals supporting patients and families experiencing acute medical and mental health crisis.

My ongoing education as a therapist has included supervision and consultation with a psychoanalytic senior therapist, training in the International Coach Federation model of coaching, training in the evidence-based incorporation of self-compassion into psychotherapy (the work of Kristin Neff and Christopher Germer), and I am currently completing a certificate program in trauma focused on the teachings of Janina Fisher, PhD.

In addition to my therapy training, I am a certified yoga teacher with extensive training in mindfulness practices.  I hold a certificate from the Mindful Yoga and Meditation Teacher Training program at the Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Marin County, California. Mindfulness practices of bringing attention to moment-to-moment experience deeply inform my therapeutic work with clients.

My own self inquiry and healing has taken me from sessions on the therapist couch, to countless silent hours in meditation halls, to days spent plodding through Pacific Northwest forests, to queer and feminist studies, to downward facing dog.  I continue to learn from the range of emotions and experiences - ups and downs, joy and sorrow - that show up in life on a daily basis.  Other things to know about me: I use she/they pronouns and my cat Sybil may virtually join some of our therapy sessions.

I consider the practice of therapy to be a great honor, and I look forward to collaborating with you on your journey to wellness.

Please see the "Tenets of my Practice" section on the Therapy page to learn more about how I practice.
